Three Day Eventing it is called,
but only the top competitors need three days to do this. On a lower
level all three parts of this competition are ridden on one day.
The competition starts with a dressagetest, after that a cross country
with natural obstacles is waiting. It is not only the jumping that
counts, you also have to ride in an ideal speed. And that is not
simple as fast as possible! After the cross-country, heartbeat,
breathing rate and temperature are checked by veterinarians and
if that is okay, the last part consists of showjumping.
The scoring systems works with penalty points, the
goal is to gain as little as possible penalty points. The points
deserved during the dressage test are deducted from the maximal
score and the remainder counts as penalty points. Too much or too
little (!) time used during the cross-country causes penalty points.
A stop costs time, but also extra penalty points. The showjumping
course has to be ridden within a time limit and of course a failure
causes penalty points. At the end of the day the combination with
the lowest amount of penalty points is the winner.
The Connemara has been competing very well the last
years. Several years already 1 or 2 Connemara's have been part of
the Dutch team for the European Championships Eventing. A very good
performance if you keep in mind that the Connemara breed is very
small in the Netherlands, compared to Dutch Riding Ponies or New
Forest Ponies.
Van de Arenbosch Rodger was still part of the
Dutch team when he was 21 years old! Hatatitla van de Leliaard ended
in 7th place during his first EC. Future van de Kiboets also competed
once during an EC and performed very well.
